Statement of Her Excellency Dr. Varsen Aghabekian Shahin Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, for International Day of Women in Diplomacy
As we commemorate International Day of Women in Diplomacy, it is my honor to acknowledge those women who have spent their lives striving for peace, dialogue, justice, and international cooperation. Women diplomats across the world are today making an important impact through their leadership, dedication, and bridge building among nations.
This particular day holds significance for Palestine because today as the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine, I feel honored to be part of the long legacy of Palestinian women, who with their courage and determination have left an indelible mark in our diplomatic journey.
It is with great pride that I speak on behalf of all Palestinian women who have served our people with distinction over the decades and whose diplomatic contributions have made such a difference in Palestine. Palestinian diplomacy has been shaped by generations of distinguished women who have proudly carried Palestine's voice to the international stage.
Among the women who have left a lasting mark on Palestinian diplomacy, Leila Shahid and Hanan Ashrawi stand as inspiring examples of leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment. Their contributions have helped pave the way for generations of Palestinian women who continue to serve with distinction as ambassadors, heads of mission, diplomats, and public officials, strengthening Palestine's international engagement and defending the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
Today, our Palestinian women are making significant contributions at our embassies and missions as well as in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates. They are contributing to policy-making, negotiation, multilateral diplomacy, consular activities, public diplomacy, and international law. Their efforts prove on a daily basis the necessity for women’s leadership in diplomacy.
As we observe the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, we reiterate our resolve to guarantee the full and meaningful participation of women in diplomacy. Not only is this a requirement of equality, but it is a necessity if peace, justice, and international cooperation are to be realized. Palestine is steadfast in its commitment to support women diplomats whose contributions have helped make the world a better place.
Happy International Day of Women in Diplomacy.
